Virginia Tech Hokies head baseball coach John Szefc received a contract extension through the 2030 season on Wednesday, September 30.

Szefc is coming off his ninth season as the head coach of the Hokies in Blacksburg. He led Virginia Tech to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022. The team played in the Los Angeles Regional at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

In a press release from Virginia Tech Athletics, Szefc talked about what it meant to receive a contract extension and remain with the Hokies.

“I want to thank Brian White [Athletic Director] and President [Timothy] Sands for their belief in our coaching staff and me as far as leading the Virginia Tech baseball program into the future. We are really excited about what we have been able to solidify and put in place thus far. We are obviously very eager to continue into the future and keep building, keep growing this program as we have in the past.”

Szefc and his head coaching career

Along with Virginia Tech, Szefc has spent some time as the head coach of the Marist Red Foxes and Maryland Terrapins.

He was the head coach of Marist from 1996 to 2002, where he compiled a 209-135-3 record. Szefc won six different conference titles with the Red Foxes and led them to the NCAA Tournament four times.

After spending time as an assistant at schools like Louisiana, Kansas, and Kansas State, Szefc was hired as Maryland's head coach in 2012.

He won 179 games with the Terrapins over the course of five seasons. Maryland made two super regionals under Szefc in 2014 and 2015. The Terrapins made the NCAA Tournament again under Szefc during his final season with the team in 2017.

After being at Maryland, Szefc became the Virginia Tech head baseball coach in 2018.

Although the beginning of his tenure in Blacksburg was slow, it picked up in a big way. In 2022, in Szefc's fifth season as the head coach, the Hokies had a 45-14 overall record and a 19-9 record in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. Virginia Tech won the ACC regular-season title for the first time since 2000. The Hokies also made their first-ever super regional that season.

Szefc has won 253 games at Virginia Tech after nine seasons with the program. He has 641 wins as a head coach at all of his stops during his career.
