The inaugural Women's Professional Baseball League postseason began on Wednesday.
Each of the league's four teams played 15 regular-season games. The San Francisco Firebells finished in first place with a 10-5 record, followed by the Los Angeles Queens (8-7), New York Heights (8-7), and Boston Hunters (4-11).
All four WPBL teams advance to the postseason.
Here's a breakdown of the playoff format, according to the league's website.
"In the semifinals, the No. 1 Seed faces the No. 4 Seed in Series A, while the No. 2 Seed faces the No. 3 Seed in Series B. Each semifinal is best-of-three, and the first team to win two games advances. The Series A and Series B winners meet in the best-of-five WPBL Championship, with the first team to win three games claiming the title. Games listed 'if needed' are played only if the series has not already been decided. All postseason games are played at Robin Roberts Stadium."
The Firebells quickly advanced to the WPBL Championship with two consecutive wins over the Hunters.
They secured a 9-6 victory in Game 2 of the semifinals on Friday, hitting three solo home runs (Kelsi Whitmore, Skylar Kaplan, Alexia Jorge) as a team.
The Queens and Heights are tied at one game apiece in the best-of-three semifinal series. New York managed to stave off elimination with a 9-7 win on Saturday. They led 7-2 after the fourth inning, but the Queens made things interesting with five total runs in the fifth and sixth.
Designated hitter Catherine O'Sullivan went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs for the Heights, and starting pitcher Rakyung Kim struck out three and allowed two earned runs on seven hits in three innings.
The decisive Game 3 of the semifinal between the Queens and Heights is Monday at 7 p.m. EDT at Robin Roberts Stadium.
Game 1 of the best-of-five WPBL Championship is Wednesday.
