The No. 1 overall pick from the 2026 Major League Baseball Draft is done for the season.

Roch Cholowsky has been shut down for the remainder of the season by the Chicago White Sox. The shortstop was bothered by right wrist soreness and had not played since Aug. 15 for High-A Winston-Salem.

Cholowsky hit .167/.326/.333 with one home run, three doubles, 10 RBIs, and three stolen bases in three attempts in the first nine games of his professional career.

He went 0-for-3 with a walk in his final game before the White Sox ruled him out for the year.

Cholowsky, 21, is Chicago's top-ranked prospect and the No. 11-rated prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. The California native was a star at UCLA from 2024-26 and was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award this past spring.

UCLA's season came to an abrupt end at the NCAA Los Angeles Regional against St. Mary's. The Bruins opened the year as the No. 1 team in the country and a contender to make a push for a College World Series title.

They set a program record with 27 consecutive wins before a 4-0 loss to Santa Barbara on April 14.

During the college campaign, Cholowsky hit .320/.452/.636 with 21 homers and 60 RBIs. He was named the Big Ten Player of the Year.

Cholowsky is a strong defender at shortstop despite a lack of explosiveness. He hit for both average and power at UCLA and was the third college shortstop to be selected with the first overall pick.

The last college shortstop selected No. 1 overall was Dansby Swanson in 2015 by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

MLB Pipeline notes that Cholowsky's estimated arrival to the Majors could be as early as 2027.
