A Cleveland County District Court granted Oklahoma outfielder Trey Gambill a temporary restraining order (TRO), which allows him to return to Sooners baseball.

The TRO granted to Gambill was issued by District Judge Michael Tupper, according to OKC News. The same judge granted a TRO to Oklahoma Sooners basketball player BJ Edwards, along with the Oklahoma outfielder.
Gambill's return by way of a TRO was granted because he was the plaintiff in a lawsuit that went against the NCAA and its new "five-for-five" rule. The rule was approved this summer by the NCAA and grants college athletes a fifth year of eligibility.
However, athletes from the 2022 high school class were excluded from it. Gambill was a part of the 2022 high school class and just wrapped up his senior season with the Sooners. He was previously out of eligibility, and the new "five-for-five" rule allows him one more year at Oklahoma after he previously would have been ineligible.
The Oklahoma outfielder joins his teammate, Dayton Tockey, who also received a TRO from the Cleveland County District Court back in September. Gambill and Edwards were the recent plaintiffs added to the TROs.
Trey Gambill and his national championship season with Oklahoma
Gambill is coming off a season where he made a major impact on the Oklahoma Sooners. In a season where the Sooners won the national championship, Gambill had a .285 batting average, 14 doubles, 11 home runs, and 40 RBIs.
He also had a .426 on-base percentage and stole 17 bases; this made him a true offensive threat in Oklahoma's 2026 lineup that won it all.
During Oklahoma's unprecedented 2026 NCAA Tournament run, Gambill had a big-time performance in the Lawrence Super Regional. He had two multi-hit games against the Jayhawks. In those two games, he combined for two home runs and two RBIs.
In the 2026 College World Series, Gambill had a four-hit game against the Georgia Bulldogs on June 17. He also finished that game with three RBIs, a double, and a home run as well.
With Gambill back in Norman, the Sooners have another player who knows what it takes to get the team back to the College World Series.
Up next for Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Sooners will begin the 2027 college baseball season in the Shriners Children's College Showdown at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. On February 19, they will play the Arizona Wildcats. The first pitch for that game is at noon ET.
