This week, the Texas Longhorns had some big recruiting news roll their way. Theo Swafford, the number one prospect in the 2028 high school class according to Perfect Game, committed to the Longhorns.
Swafford had a message regarding his commitment to Texas on his Instagram.
"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to further my academic and athletic career at the University of Texas. First, I would like to thank God for blessing me with the talent to play the game I love. I'm also incredibly thankful for my Mom, Dad, sister, family, and everyone who has helped me along the way. A special thank you to Coach [Jim] Schlossnagle, Coach Tulo [Troy Tulowitzki], Coach [Jack] Marder, and Coach [Max] Weiner for believing in me. I'm super grateful and ready to compete for a National Championship!!"
What you need to know about Swafford, Texas Longhorns recruiting
Swafford is a left-handed hitter with two-way talent from Ventura, California. He currently plays for Sierra Canyon High School and plays the middle infield on defense.
He has great potential at the plate as a hitter. According to Perfect Game's scouting report, Swafford has "lots of upside in the box" and "has pop to all parts of the field."
Swafford is joining Texas' 2028 recruiting class that ranks fourth overall in the country, with four total prospects who announced their commitment. All four of the Longhorns' 2028 committed prospects are ranked in Perfect Game's top 100.
The three teams ahead of Texas in the 2028 recruiting rankings are the Texas A&M Aggies, the Florida Gators, and the Kentucky Wildcats.
The Longhorns have a great trajectory with their high school recruiting as a whole. According to Perfect Game, the Longhorns finished with the fourth-best class in the 2026 recruiting cycle and have the second-best class in the upcoming 2027 cycle.
In the 2026 and 2027 recruiting cycles, Texas has eight top-100 prospects committed to play for the team in Austin.
Texas 2026 season results
As for the on-field performance, the Texas Longhorns are coming off a great 2026 season. The team made it to the College World Series for the first time since 2022 in head coach Jim Schlossnagle's second season.
The Longhorns finished with a 46-15 overall record and a 19-10 record in Southeastern Conference (SEC) play. Texas finished in second place in the SEC standings this past season behind the Georgia Bulldogs.
