It was an uncharacteristic season for the LSU Tigers in 2026. The team finished with a 9-21 Southeastern Conference (SEC) record and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018.

In order for the Tigers to get back in the right direction, they will need great seasons from multiple players, including sophomore Omar Serna Jr. The Houston native was a bright spot for LSU in 2026 and is set up to be one of the big-time hitters in the SEC next season.

Serna and his freshman season with LSU and where he fits on the 2027 team

In 2026, Serna was a part of the SEC All-Freshman team. He was one of two LSU players to be a part of the SEC All-Freshman team alongside Mason Braun.

The catcher played in 50 games for the Tigers and had a .308 batting average with a .395 on-base percentage. Serna also had 10 doubles, nine home runs, and 37 RBIs.

Despite LSU having a rough time in conference play, Serna was the third-best hitter on the team in SEC games with a .320 batting average, seven home runs, and 21 RBIs.

Cade Arrambide is also returning to Baton Rouge in 2027, and he is the likely pick to be LSU’s starting catcher. However, Serna did make 21 starts at catcher in 2026, meaning he could get playing time behind the plate.

Serna made 19 starts as the designated hitter in the Tigers’ lineup last season. Heading into 2027, it seems like Serna will fit nicely into a designated hitter role, considering Arrambide will fill in at catcher for a good bit of the season.

LSU’s first opponent in 2027

The LSU Tigers will start the 2027 college baseball season with a weekend series against the Long Island Sharks from February 19 to February 21.

That series will be at home for the Tigers at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge. LSU had a 23-14 record at home last season.
