On August 12, North Florida Ospreys head baseball coach Joe Mercadante signed a contract extension through the 2030 college baseball season.
Mercadante commented on his extension in a press release from North Florida Athletics.
"I am incredibly grateful for the continued support from our university's administration, Nick Morrow, and the athletic department," Mercadante said. "North Florida is a special place, and my family and I are so fortunate to call this city and campus our home. I'm proud of what we are building together."
A big-time turnaround at North Florida and 2026 Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year
The 2026 college baseball season was Mercadante's third as the head coach of the Ospreys. His three years at North Florida have led to a steady rebuild.
In his first season in 2024, Mercadante led the Ospreys to a 21-30-1 overall record. That record improved to 27-29 in 2025, during his second season as the head coach.
The 2026 season ended up being a stellar one for Mercadante and his Ospreys.
North Florida is coming off a season where they finished with a 31-24 overall record and a stellar 22-8 record in Atlantic Sun play. It is the highest win total for North Florida baseball since the 2019 college baseball season.
North Florida finished with the best conference record in the Atlantic Sun and was the number one seed in the conference tournament.
Due to this huge season in Jacksonville, Mercadante won the 2026 Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year award.
Now that he has signed a contract extension, a big step for Mercadante to take with North Florida will be making the NCAA Tournament.
The Ospreys have not made the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level. Their last appearance was in the 2005 NCAA Division II Tournament.
