LIDOM’s Gigantes del Cibao revealed their coaching staff for the 2026-27 winter season in the Dominican Republic on Thursday.
The club’s manager will be former Major League Baseball infielder Miguel Cairo, according to a post from the Gigantes’ official Instagram page.
Cairo is a former two-time interim manager in MLB, taking over for Tony La Russa’s Chicago White Sox in 2022 and the Washington Nationals in 2025 when the NL East club fired Dave Martinez.
La Russa stepped aside as White Sox manager due to health concerns.
During those two managerial stints, Cairo led the White Sox to an 18-26 record, and the Nationals to a 29-43 record.
Currently, Cairo is an infield coach with the Baltimore Orioles. He last managed in winter ball during the 2023-24 Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional season with the Navegantes del Magallanes. But the LVBP club went 24-33 in the regular season and missed the playoffs.
Jose Javier will be Cairo’s bench coach, and Rafael Chaves and Elvis Rodriguez are the Gigantes’ pitching and hitting coaches, respectively.
The Gigantes last won the LIDOM title in 2022.
Before his coaching career, Cairo played 17 MLB seasons for 12 different teams from 1996 to 2012 as a utility infielder. He mostly appeared at second and third base and had a 3.2 bWAR season in 1998 with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Cairo was born in Anaco, Venezuela, and signed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1990.
