Monterrey starter Manny Banuelos had, by anyone's standards, a good start in Game 1 of the Serie Campeonato.

Throwing five innings and allowing one run on four hits, Banuelos struck out eight and walked two.

But the one run he gave up, on a solo homer by Tijuana's Justin Turner in the bottom of the fourth, was all the offense the Toros would need to take Game 1.

They'd add another run in the bottom of the eighth on another solo homer by Franchy Cordero to win 2-0.

Tijuana got 4 2/3 innings from starter Adonis Medina, and the Toros' bullpen held the Sultanes to four hits over 4 1/3 innings, maintaining the combined shutout as the Toros' staff allowed nine hits and walked two.

Monterrey went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners in the game, and went 0-for-4 when they had the tying run on third base, squandering opportunities to tie the game in the top of the fifth and seventh innings.

Game 2 is tonight at 10:35 p.m. EDT, with Daniel Mengden starting for the Sultanes against Noah Skirrow for the Toros.

Zone Sur Serie Campeonato Starts Tonight - The Pericos de Puebla face the Olmecas de Tabasco in Game 1 in Villahermosa tonight at 7 p.m. EDT, with Vladimir Gutierrez going for the Pericos against Daniel Camarena for Tabasco.
