The KIA Tigers moved within one win of advancing with a 6-3 victory over the LG Twins on Sunday, taking a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five series behind another strong start from ace Adam Oller and an early offensive outburst.
Oller finished the regular season second in ERA at 3.13 and innings pitched at 178, and fourth in strikeouts with 180. The Twins countered with Chan-Kyu Im, whose late-season struggles continued in the postseason.
After Oller retired the side in order in the first inning, the Tigers’ offense erupted in the bottom half. Following a leadoff out, the next seven batters reached base. Harold Castro delivered an RBI single, Sung-bum Na followed with an RBI double, Sun-bin Kim hit a two-run double and Jun-su Han added another RBI double.
Im was pulled after recording just one out as the Tigers built an early lead. He now owns a 10.59 ERA in his last five starts.
The Twins got on the board in the third inning on Bon-hyeok Gu’s RBI single to center field. Hae-min Park added another RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-2, bringing the tying run to the plate in the fifth. Oller escaped the jam with a foul out.
Oller finished with eight strikeouts and two runs allowed over six innings, continuing the Tigers’ dominance in the starting rotation through the first two games.
KIA’s starters have combined for 13 innings, allowing three runs while striking out 14. LG’s starters have totaled just 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs, seven of them earned, while recording seven strikeouts.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh. With runners on the corners and one out, Na lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to extend the lead to 6-2.
It was KIA’s first run since the first inning and came after the Tigers had gone without a hit since the second.
LG answered in the eighth when Jeong-bin Moon blooped an RBI single with two outs to make it 6-3. Another single brought the tying run to the plate, prompting KIA to call on Sang-hyun Jeon.
Moved into the closer role late in the season, Jeon ended the threat by striking out Jae-won Lee.
Jeon returned for the ninth and retired the side in order, striking out Gu to secure the victory and put the defending champions on the brink of elimination.
The win was KIA’s ninth consecutive victory over LG this season and left the Twins needing three straight wins to advance. The winner advances to play the Samsung Lions.
The series shifts to Seoul for Games 3 and 4, beginning Tuesday. With LG facing elimination, Game 3 could be the final game played at Jamsil Baseball Stadium, which is scheduled for demolition later this year.
The Twins will turn to former longtime major league starter Carlos Carrasco for the must-win game. Carrasco posted a 4.05 ERA with 50 strikeouts over 60 innings during the regular season. He delivered his strongest performance in the wild-card round against Doosan, allowing one run on four hits over six innings.
The Tigers will counter with Japanese right-hander Keisho Shirakawa, 25, who posted a 4.75 ERA in 17 starts and 83 1/3 innings during the regular season.
