This weekend, the Kansas State Wildcats gave their head coach Pete Hughes a contract extension that will last through the 2031 season.

Hughes is entering his ninth season as the head coach of the Wildcats in Manhattan.

Kansas State Athletic Director Gene Taylor gave his thoughts on the extension in a press release.

"Coach Hughes has established a great culture within our baseball program and consistently put our teams in a position to compete in the postseason. He and his staff have continued to elevate our program in all facets – talent level, wins, facilities, community involvement and academics – and we are excited for the years ahead under his leadership. In addition, Pete, his wife Debby, and their family have made Manhattan their home and will continue to make a tremendous impact on our community."

Hughes and his coaching career with Kansas State

In eight seasons with the Wildcats, Hughes has won 230 total games.

He has led Kansas State to the NCAA Tournament twice in 2024 and 2025. During those two tournament appearances, the Wildcats won four games. In 2024, Kansas State won the Fayetteville Regional and played the Virginia Cavaliers in the Charlottesville Super Regional. It was Kansas State’s second super regional appearance ever.

Before the 2024 and 2025 NCAA Tournament runs, Kansas State had been on a decade-long NCAA Tournament drought.

Hughes has also led the Wildcats to four-straight 30 win seasons. It is the first time they have had a streak of winning like that in the 21st century.

Before coaching the Kansas State Wildcats, Hughes was also the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, the Virginia Tech Hokies, and the Boston College Eagles. He was the Big East Coach of the Year with Boston College twice in 2000 and 2002.
