Just a day after it was announced that Benji Gil wouldn't return to manage the Charros de Jalisco in the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol next summer, his landing spot has been announced.
Gil will replace Lorenzo Bundy as manager of the Diablos Rojos del Mexico. Bundy, 66, stepped down last week to take a year-round advisory role in the Diablos' front office.
A former first-round pick of the Texas Rangers, Gil has managed Mexico in the last two World Baseball Classics, leading the club to the semifinals in 2023. He's won back-to-back titles in the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico, the country's winter league, and his Charros beat their LMP rival, the Lorenzo Bundy-managed Tomateros de Culiacan, 12-11 in 10 innings in the championship game at the 2026 Caribbean Series. Gil is currently managing the Charros franchise in that circuit, and Bundy is managing the Tomateros.
In the LMB, Gil led the Charros' LMB franchise to the Serie del Rey in 2026, where they were swept by the Bundy-managed Diablos Rojos del Mexico in the best-of-seven series. He won the league's manager of the year award in 2021 when he led the Mariachis de Guadalajara after going 46-16 and winning the Zona Norte in the regular season. He didn't return the next year, but was hired to manage the Charros when the LMP club's owners bought the Mariachis franchise out of bankruptcy.
With the Diablos, Gil walks into an LMB franchise with an MLB-quality ballpark in Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu, which has hosted MLB's Mexico City Series three times in the last four years, and a billionaire owner, Alfredo Harp Helu, who hasn't been afraid to spend money on his team.
Over the past three seasons, the Diablos have signed 17-year MLB veteran Robinson Cano and 2020 National League Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer, and won back-to-back Serie del Rey titles in 2024 and 2025.
