The inaugural season of the Women's Professional Baseball League is over.

On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Queens were crowned the first WPBL champions with a 2-0 victory over the San Francisco Firebells in Game 5 of the Championship Series.

The Queens took a commanding 2-0 series lead in the first few contests, but the Firebells stormed back to force a winner-take-all Game 5.

Japanese pitcher Ayami Sato threw a complete-game shutout on Tuesday for the Queens, the first in the brief history of the league. She allowed just five hits and no walks on 71 pitches. Sato was named the MVP of the Championship Series.

“I felt today’s game went really slow because I just wanted to feel every single moment,” Sato told the crowd through her translator, Mayo Hirano, per MLB.com's Michael Clair. “I wanted to enjoy my baseball with the best teammates in the world. My mind and my pitching connected successfully, and we won.”

In the championship round, Sato recorded two wins along with six strikeouts and four earned runs in 11 innings.

Firebells starter Jill Albayati also had a strong day on the mound, limiting the Queens to just one hit through 4 2/3 innings. However, Los Angeles managed to push across two runs in the third.

Following a walk and an error, center fielder Mo'ne Davis laced an RBI single. A few batters later, Ashton Lansdell roped a line-drive ground ball to San Francisco shortstop Joely Leguizamon.

Leguizamon made a nice stop and recorded a force out at third base, but the runner from third crossed home plate.

Those two runs were more than enough for Sato, who managed to throw the shutout despite striking out just one batter.

Putting the financial metrics aside, it was a successful first season for the WPBL. Firebells center fielder Kelsie Whitmore, the first overall pick in the draft, reflected on what this season meant for her and other female baseball players.

“I was telling the girls that the win tonight wasn’t the only and biggest thing from this whole season,” Whitmore told Clair. "It was the fact that we had a league of our own and we were able to compete. … What a way to finish up the season, just to represent what women’s baseball is. If there was anyone watching tonight for the first time, they were going to see some good baseball.”
