BBO--WORLD SERIES

Brewers withstand Rays’ comeback attempt to win 3-2 in Game 1 of World Series

SUMMARY: Trevor Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca with runners on second and third to wiggle out of a ninth-inning jam as the Milwaukee Brewers escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the World Series. DeLuca’s strikeout came after Tampa Bay’s Liam Hicks had grounded into an apparent game-ending double play that was overturned after a video review. Replays determined Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt’s right foot was slightly off the bag when he reached to catch a high throw from second baseman Brice Turang. Jacob Misiorowski allowed one run over five innings to earn the win.

BBO--WORLD SERIES-BREWERS-MISIOROWSKI

Brewers’ Jacob Misiorowski sets World Series velocity record on his first pitch

SUMMARY: Jacob Misiorowski broke the record for fastest World Series pitch with the very first offering of this year’s Fall Classic, a 103.5 mph fastball from the Milwaukee Brewers’ fireballer to the Tampa Bay Rays’ Yandy Díaz. Misiorowski allowed one run and four hits over five innings with three strikeouts, leaving with a 2-1 lead. Misiorowski’s first pitch, taken for a ball above the strike zone, was listed at 103.4 mph on the stadium video boards but clocked at 103.5 by MLB’s Statcast system. Aroldis Chapman of the Chicago Cubs had set the mark for a Series pitcher at 103.2 mph in 2016.

Jayson Tatum vents over Jaylen Brown’s ‘cap’ post as Celtics win overshadowed by trade drama talk

SUMMARY: Jayson Tatum addressed his frustrations with the ongoing drama surrounding the relationship between he and Jaylen Brown after Brown’s trade to the Philadelphia 76ers. Instead of discussing his 36-point performance in the Celtics’ win over the Knicks, Tatum spent most of his postgame news conference explaining his side of the situation. Brown responded to comments Tatum made on a YouTube video in which he said he was surprised with by the trade with a “cap” emoji on Instagram, implying it was untrue. Tatum expressed frustration with how their relationship has been portrayed, emphasizing there’s no animosity, despite the perception otherwise.

Mavericks lose Cooper Flagg with shoulder injury following hard foul in 1st half against Pacers

SUMMARY: Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg has been ruled out for the rest of Friday night’s game against the Indiana Pacers with a left shoulder injury. Last season’s NBA Rookie of the Year was injured late in the first half when he appeared headed for a breakaway dunk. Pacers swingman Aaron Nesmith fouled Flagg hard from behind, knocking Flagg off balance and he landed awkwardly on the shoulder under the basket. A brief shoving match ensued as coaches tried to separate the players. Nesmith was called for a flagrant foul on the play and a double technical was assessed to Nesmaith and Dallas guard Naji Marshall.

BKL--WNBA FINALS-TRUMP-ANTHEM

Players in WNBA Finals tuning out President Trump, other outside noise, say their focus on the games

SUMMARY: Players in the WNBA Finals say they are focused on the upcoming game and not President Trump’s comments about the national anthem. Trump spoke a rally on Thursday in Iowa and criticized players for leaving the court before the national anthem is played. It has been part of WNBA players’ pregame routine for several years, dating back to at least when they played an entire season in Florida in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Teams have left before the anthem is played to raise awareness for social justice issues or simply to continue to get ready for the game. When asked Friday about the president’s comments, Atlanta and Golden State players who are competing for the WNBA championship said they were locked in on the next game, not the president’s comments.

The Devils sent center Dawson Mercer, goalie Nico Daws, prospect Alexander Command, forward Nick Bjugstad, a 2029 second-round pick and a 2027 seventh-rounder to Winnipeg for Hellebuyck. The long-awaited trade ends months of speculation, a failed bid to move the U.S. Olympic gold medal-winner and 2024-25 NHL MVP in June, and the Jets’ suspension of Hellebuyck for failing to report to training camp in a standoff that required the involvement of the league and the Players’ Association.

FBN-ON FOOTBALL-OFFENSIVE COORDINATORS

Mike McDaniel, Brian Daboll and other first-year offensive coordinators are struggling

SUMMARY: It’s been a rough start for some high-profile offensive coordinators with new teams. Former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel was supposed to help elevate Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers, bringing his innovative ideas to the West Coast. Instead, the Chargers are 0-6 because the offense has been terrible and Herbert has regressed significantly. Former Giants coach Brian Daboll was expected to develop Cam Ward the way he helped Josh Allen in Buffalo. But the Tennessee Titans have the worst offense in the league and Ward has been inconsistent. The New York Jets are 25th in yards and 27th in scoring in former Colts coach Frank Reich’s offense.
